What is SUNBREWED?

SUNBREWED is a European project that introduces solar thermal energy into the brewing industry. It focuses on providing clean steam for beer production using parabolic trough technology and thermal storage. The aim is to replace  fossil fuels with renewable heat while demonstrating a scalable model for other industrial sectors.

Who funds it?

SUNBREWED is funded by the European Union through the Innovation Fund under project number 101156599. The project receives EU support to drive innovation in industrial decarbonization and contribute to the European Green Deal.

How does the solar system work?

The SUNBREWED system uses curved mirrors (parabolic troughs) to focus sunlight onto a receiver tube filled with heat transfer fluid. This heated fluid then generates steam via a boiler. A steam accumulator stores excess heat, ensuring consistent supply even during cloudy conditions. The system is automated for optimal performance and safety.

Can other breweries join?

Yes, the SUNBREWED model is designed for replication. Breweries interested in adopting solar heat can explore similar installations through the project’s findings, shared openly via events, reports, and contact with the consortium. The aim is to inspire a wave of solar-powered breweries across Europe and beyond.
